Attendees at the 2010 International Equestrian Festival, which is going on simultaneously with the 2010 World Equestrian Games, received a bonus when rider biomechanics expert Colleen Kelly spoke about how to make your thoroughbred racehorse faster. For those who do not know Colleen Kelly, she is one of the most sought-after speakers in the world and lectures on the science of improving riders’ balance, seat and posture.
During the presentation, Colleen Kelly focused on the relationship between the horse and the jockey, and explained that a rider who had exceptional balance using certain postures and techniques would be able to beat another rider who had good balance but poor posture and riding technique. For example, as an example of poor technique, she stated that many jockeys ride with their on "toenails" on the stirrips instead of on the balls of their feet and do not properly use their arms and hands. Without using proper technique, the horse will have to work harder to run faster. Racehorses which do not have to overcome a jockey's poor riding techinique can run faster.
