While thousands of visitors to Lexington Kentucky attended the 2010 World Equestrian Games at the nearby Kentucky Horse Park, world renowned horse trainer Monte Roberts demonstrated his jaw dropping training techniques in front of a few hundred people at the International Equestrian Festival located in the Lexington Center.
For those who do not know Monty Roberts, he has been one of Hollywood's star horse trainers and has been teaching and presenting his methods of training horses for many years. In Lexington, he presented four horses with very bad behavior problems (including one stallion nicknamed "Hanibal Lectre") and in approximately 30 minutes per horse, taught the horses how to get rid of their fear and to act perfectly in tune with Mr. Roberts, even after he disconnected their lead lines!
Monty Roberts demonstrated his techniques and stressed that trainers and owners do not have to abuse nor beat nor whip the horses to teach horses how to behave. He further pointed out that people teach horses to kick and to react negatively to people. Instead, he demonstrated that one only has to use certain body movements and award the horse for positive behavior and gently correct the horse for negative behavior using a unique halter he designed. He stressed that the horse must be taught using both the right AND left sides and not just one side.
